If you get or have experienced pelvic pain, you might associate it with the cramping women sometimes get during their menstrual period.
Occasional, minor pelvic pain isn’t always a cause for concern, but if your pelvic pain is chronic or you’re in severe pain, the cause of your pain might be more serious.
At Artemis Menstrual Health and Gynecology in Lockport, New York, Julie Madejski, MD, and our gynecology team recommend you get an immediate screening of severe or chronic pelvic pain to determine what’s causing it. You should never ignore pelvic pain.
What is pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain is any type of pain you feel in your lower abdomen, below the belly button area. Like other kinds of pain, pelvic pain can range from mild to severe in intensity and be short-lived or long-term in duration.
Minor, occasional pelvic pain can come from a benign cause, such as mild menstrual cramping at the start of your period. However, chronic pelvic pain or extremely painful cramps that come on suddenly might have a dangerous origin.
Common causes of pelvic pain
Pelvic pain can be a symptom of a number of medical conditions, some quite serious. These are some of the most common reasons you might experience pelvic pain.
Uterine fibroids
Uterine fibroids are growths in the lining of your uterus, and they can cause problems with your fertility alongside pelvic pain, painful intercourse, and other uncomfortable symptoms.
Dr. Madejski can remove any fibroids causing problems with a minimally invasive, in-office procedure.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue that lines your uterus grows outside of it, often resulting in pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, and challenges getting pregnant.
Dr. Madejski can treat endometriosis with minimally invasive robot-assisted laparoscopy or endometrial ablation procedures.
Ovarian cysts
Most ovarian cysts cause no symptoms, but an extremely large or ruptured ovarian cyst can result in excruciating pelvic pain. Contact our office or go to the emergency room immediately for treatment if you suspect you have a ruptured ovarian cyst.
Ectopic pregnancy
Severe pelvic pain is one of the top symptoms of ectopic pregnancy, a condition where your egg is fertilized in your fallopian tube, making your pregnancy nonviable.
Untreated, an ectopic pregnancy can cause your fallopian tube to burst and be life-threatening, so make an appointment quickly to have Dr. Madejski end your ectopic pregnancy using medication or laparoscopy.
Pelvic inflammatory disease
PID is an infection of your reproductive organs that causes pelvic pain. Untreated PID can cause infertility and other complications, so make an appointment for immediate diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics.
Ovarian cancer
In rare cases, pelvic pain means you have ovarian cancer. Treatment for ovarian cancer includes surgery to remove cancerous areas and chemotherapy.

It may be tempting to try to manage pelvic pain with over-the-counter pain medication, but you should contact Artemis Menstrual Health and Gynecology or seek emergency care to have any chronic or severe pelvic pain evaluated.
Our team can determine the cause of your pelvic pain, using a laparoscopy procedure if needed, and develop a treatment plan.
