When your monthly period is irregular, extremely heavy, or otherwise unusual, you might be experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding is sometimes benign, but an atypical menstrual cycle, or bleeding outside of your menstrual cycle, can indicate an underlying health condition that requires small surgery.

At Artemis Menstrual Health and Gynecology, board-certified gynecologist Julie Madejski, MD, performs minor procedures on an outpatient basis at our comfortable office in Lockport, New York.

About abnormal uterine bleeding

Typically, women of childbearing age have a menstrual period that lasts around a week and comes about every 24-38 days. You might have abnormal uterine bleeding if your menstrual cycle is significantly longer or shorter.

Additional symptoms of abnormal uterine bleeding include:

  • Periods regularly last more than a week
  • Heavy menstrual flow; soaking through your tampon or pad over once an hour
  • Bleeding outside of your usual monthly period
  • Bleeding after sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding after you’ve gone through menopause

The team at Artemis Menstrual Health and Gynecology evaluates you to determine why you’re experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding and the best treatment course.

When you need surgery for abnormal uterine bleeding

Whether you need a surgical procedure for your abnormal uterine bleeding depends on the underlying cause. Our team can treat some types of abnormal uterine bleeding through nonsurgical methods, including medication, hormonal birth control, and lifestyle changes.

We’re most likely to recommend a small surgery if Dr. Madejski diagnoses or suspects you have uterine fibroids or endometrial polyps, or if nonsurgical methods haven’t brought relief.

What is a small surgery for abnormal uterine bleeding?

A small surgery is a minor, minimally invasive procedure done on an outpatient basis that can diagnose or treat your abnormal uterine bleeding. Your surgery is performed by Dr. Madejski on-site at Artemis Menstrual Health and Gynecology.

With small surgery, you won’t have to go to the hospital, so you experience the benefits of the procedure without the long recovery period of traditional surgery. Your small surgery also carries fewer risks.

Small surgeries to treat abnormal uterine bleeding

Dr. Madejski performs two procedures for abnormal uterine bleeding at Artemis Menstrual Health and Gynecology:

Hysteroscopy

Dr. Madejski can perform a hysteroscopy to diagnose and treat polyps, fibroids, or growths that are causing your abnormal uterine bleeding. During a hysteroscopy, she inserts a hysteroscope into your vagina; the small device sends images of your uterus to a screen.

The images show Dr. Madejski whether there are any growths in your uterus. If there are, she can go in and remove them immediately, during the same procedure.

Endometrial ablation

Endometrial ablation can resolve your abnormal uterine bleeding if it’s caused by reasons other than growths. During this minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Madejski removes your uterine lining, which can cause heavy or abnormal bleeding.
